About

Compared to adults a high percentage of children fall into the gap between the train and the platform. In an effort to ensure the safety of all rail users, JR West Osaka Branch is collaborating with Osaka Municipal Institute of Design Education, Hashitomo Library,and Osaka Public University to raise awareness of falls among users. With the Tokyu Corporation joining the project in 2022, and Keio Corporation joining in 2023 - as of 2024 the Yokohama City Transportation Bureau will also join the SUKIMAMORI project, working with the company and local community to advance the project’s message.

There are many ways in which passengers can fall. It’s possible for children carrying school bags to fall up to their thighs, or in other cases children have fallen all the way up to their heads.

The design is intended to communicate directly with children, not simply saying “Don’t do this!” or “Pay atttenion!” But rather it is designed in a way that children can see the message themselves and begin to solve the problem themselves.

We aim to prevent people from falling through gaps, with a character called "Sukimamori" as the main focus.

Digital signage

We are producing a video for digital signage in train stations. The content of the digital signage is an animated video using skimamori. It uses an isometric drawing method that easily expresses depth and a sense of three-dimensionality.

To spread awareness about the project, an exhibit on the “Child gap fall prevention project” was held at the Osaka City Hall.

Event【Kyoto Railway Museum】

Adventures of Sukimamori

An event was held on November 12 (Sat.) and 13 (Sun.), 2022, to inform children visiting the Kyoto Railway Museum about the dangers of gaps.

●Sukimamori Children's Maze
We did a skimamori maze to let people experience the gap between the train and the platform! We hope the maze gave them a fun way to feel the gap.

●Original picture-story show
We performed an original picture-story show to let people know that gaps are dangerous!

●AR Photo Spot
A mysterious photo spot is set up where you can take a picture with Sukimamori by reading the QR code with your smartphone! Take a snapshot of your memories with Sukimamori!

●novelty
We produced “Sukimamori visors” and “Sukimamori stickers” as novelty items for those who attended the event!

Event【Train and Bus Museum】

Sukimamori's House

An event was held on March 12 and 13, 2022 to inform children visiting the Train and Bus Museum about the dangers of gaps./p>

●Sukimamori's Concerns
From the skimamori, where many children have trouble falling into the gap between the train and the platform, we asked the participating children how they could avoid falling into the gap.

●Let's cross the gap as well as we can!
This is a game in which children straddle black vinyl tape attached to the inside of the car as if it were a gap. Children who participated in the game were presented with a Sukimamori sticker.

●Fhoto Spot
A skimamori was posted for commemorative photos. After the event, we will leave the “Sukimamori” panel for a while so that visitors can use it as a photo spot. Please take a look when you visit.

Workshop

We conduct workshops at kindergartens and elementary schools. We have held puppet shows to help students understand the dangers of the gap between the train and the platform, think about Sukimamori's friends, and search for the gap. We have received feedback from kindergarten teachers.

●While experiencing the fun of finding skimamori, I noticed gaps that are often missed, and felt that this led to a budding awareness of safety (5-year-old homeroom teacher).

●Not only did the children find gaps, but they also became aware that they themselves were in danger and that they should be careful. (5-year-old homeroom teacher)

●The meaning of gaps was difficult for the 3-year-olds, but they understood the gap between trains thanks to the skimamori. Parents also said that they have learned to be more careful when riding the train. (homeroom teacher of a 3-year-old)

Picture book

We are creating a picture book of Sukimamori that will appear in all mediums. It is intended as a means of communicating to children what to do when they are on a platform and the dangers of the gap between the train and the platform. Therefore, the main character is a boy of the same age as the target audience. The content is in the form of a combination of several stories, allowing the reader to think about various patterns of danger as well as falls.
